Weight is the number that decides your military move. The government pays you (on a PPM) based on the weight you move, but only up to your authorized allowance. A common rule of thumb is about 1,000 to 1,500 pounds per furnished room, and the military estimates household goods at roughly 7 pounds per cubic foot. Every military move has a weight allowance set by your rank and dependent status. It works two ways depending on how you move:

On a government (HHG) move
If you go over your allowance, the government bills YOU for the excess weight. That surprise invoice can run hundreds or thousands of dollars.

On a PPM (DITY) move
You are reimbursed for the weight you move, but only up to your allowance. Anything over the limit is weight you hauled for free — no reimbursement.

Either way, the lesson is the same: know your weight before move day. Guessing is how service members get burned.

There are two common ways to ballpark household weight before you ever hit a scale:

The 7-pounds-per-cubic-foot standard
The military estimates household goods at about 7 pounds for every cubic foot of space they take up. Movers use this to convert the size of your load into an estimated weight.

The per-room rule of thumb
A furnished room averages roughly 1,000 to 1,500 pounds once you count furniture, boxes, and everything in the closets. Heavier households (lots of furniture, tools, appliances) run higher.

Neither is exact. They get you in the ballpark so you can plan. Your OFFICIAL weight only comes from certified weight tickets — one empty (tare) and one loaded (gross) — taken at a certified scale.
